Pete Buttigieg, transportation secretary nominee and former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, spoke at a U.S. Conference of Mayors discussion on Biden administration transportation and infrastructure goals. After brief remarks, he answered questions from several mayors on a variety of topics, including transportation alternatives, highway safety, funding for rail, the need for increased federal funding, and transportation equity pertaining to the needs of diverse communities. They also discussed proposed infrastructure projects, such as the Gateway Program that would expand the Northeast rail line corridor, and how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted local transportation budgets.
