The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee held a hearing on protecting transportation industry workers and passengers from COVID-19. A panel of industry experts and professionals discussed several topics, including the implementation of standard federal coronavirus pandemic guidelines, the need for more resources to help facilitate policy and access to personal protective equipment (PPE), and vaccines for the transportation industry. Committee members and witnesses also explored the possibility of mandatory testing at airports, and how the pandemic has impacted the transportation industry. Sara Nelson, the international president for the Association of Flight Attendants, spoke about the the Payroll Support Program, calling it a lifeline for airline workers and the industry. She said if that program were to lapse, the resulting furloughs would dwarf what the industry saw at the beginning of the pandemic, potentially forcing many airlines to shutter. close
