Alston, a consolidated case challenging whether the collegiate sports association’s limits on providing compensation and benefits violate federal antitrust law. Under existing rules, colleges and universities can cover student athlete expenses related to education including tuition, fees, and room and board, as well as payments for certain things such as awards for athletic participation, academic awards and study abroad. In May 2014, West Virginia football player Shawne Alston and other college athletes filed suit challenging the NCAA’s compensation rules. A district court ruled partially in favor of the athletes, agreeing that restrictions on some of the education-related benefits are in violation of law, but the court also kept limits on compensation not pertaining to the athlete’s education.

The Supreme Court heard oral argument in NCAA v. Alston, a consolidated case challenging whether the collegiate sports association’s limits on providing compensation and benefits violate federal antitrust law.
