Between 1839 and 1844 Herman Melville worked aboard three whaleships as well as other sailing vessels. Melville scholar Mary K. Bercaw Edwards detailed his time spent as a sailor and discussed the ways in which Melville’s experiences informed his later work as a writer, including his novel Moby-Dick. This event took place at the Quaker Meeting House in Nantucket, Massachusetts, and the Nantucket Historical Association provided the video. close
