Two Senate committees held a hearing on security failures during the January 6 attack on the Capitol. “A clear lack of accurate and complete intelligence across several federal agencies contributed to this event, and not poor planning by the United States Capitol Police,” said Mr. Sund. Mr. Irving said that based on intelligence reports received by Capitol Police, they expected the protest to be similar to previous “MAGA” marches and forecast the chance of civil disobedience or arrests as “remote to improbable.” Mr. Irving and Mr. Sund provided conflicting accounts of their conversations on January 6 as to the timeline of authorizing the use of the National Guard for support. Mr. Sund also said he was made aware only the day prior to the hearing of an FBI memo that warned of violence despite his agency receiving it the night before the attack. Members raised concerns with the communication of intelligence and the structure of the Capitol Police as well as the overlapping jurisdictions. close
