The House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight held a virtual hearing on free tax services to help taxpayers during the pandemic. Experts and professionals in taxpayer advocacy testified before the committee on how the pandemic has altered the way advocacy groups can assist taxpayers. They discussed several topics, including the impact the pandemic has had on several organizations, such as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE), which primarily assist in tax preparation for lower income communities and the elderly. They also discussed the impact mail delays have had on filing taxes, the need to extend the tax filing deadline, and challenges faced when working with those individuals and communities with inadequate access to broadband and internet. close
