The Senate Budget Committee held a hearing to examine worker wages and proposals to increase the federal minimum wage to $15 dollars an hour. Among the witnesses testifying were Costco CEO Craig Jelinek, who announced his company would increase their starting wage to $16 dollars an hour. Following his remarks, employees from McDonald’s and Walmart delivered testimonials advocating for a minimum wage increase. Other witnesses included former Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Holtz-Eakin and Table 301 Restaurant Group President Carl Sobocinski, who discussed the potential implications of a minimum wage increase on small businesses and the economy. At the start, Budget Committee Chair Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) acknowledged that the CEOs of Walmart and McDonald’s declined his invitation to testify. close
