The senators debated on funding for the Energy and Water Development Act, specifically an amendment by Sen. Dale Bumpers (D-Arkansas) to end funding for the superconducting super collider (SSC). Senator Bennett Johnston (D-Louisiana) and Senator Phil Gramm (R-Texas) opposed the amendment and wanted to continue funding for the SSC. Senator Jim Sasser (D-Tennessee) spoke in favor of the amendment. The amendment failed, and funding will continue for the SSC. close
