The Senate passed a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 pandemic stimulus package. Senators voted against an increase to the federal minimum wage but approved an extension of unemployment benefits. The session began the previous day at 9:00 a.m. and ended the following day around 1:00 p.m., with a “marathon” voting session on amendments to the bill. During the session, a vote on Senator Bernie Sanders' (I-VT) amendment to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour became the longest Senate vote ever, as Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) held the vote open for 11 hours and 50 minutes in order to negotiate with Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) regarding an amendment to reduce the amount of weekly unemployment benefits in the bill. close
