Author Joseph Reidy discussed how during the Civil War the emancipation process was often messy and nonlinear, rather than occurring at one moment or neatly tied to Lincoln’s proclamation. Among examples he explored: Union colored troops forced into slavery upon capture, enslaved people on properties that spanned free and slave state borders, and those still enslaved at war’s end. The National Archives hosted this program and provided the video. close
