Following the end of the Civil War, the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments were passed - each addressing the rights of the formally enslaved. Michael Bellesiles, author of Inventing Equality: Reconstructing the Constitution in the Aftermath of the Civil War, examined the ideals expressed in the U.S. Constitution and the challenges the country has faced in trying to live up to those ideals.
