The Federal Bureau of Prisons Director Michael Carvajal testified before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies about the bureau’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Mr. Carvajal testified that 225 inmates and four prison employees had died from COVID-19. He also discussed the Bureau of Prison’s vaccination efforts, saying all 37,000 staff had been offered a vaccine and 49 percent had been vaccinated. Regarding the vaccination of the federal prison population, Mr. Carvajal said about 25 percent of inmates had been vaccinated and that he expected vaccines would be available to all federal inmates by July 2021. Other topics discussed in the hearing were the role of privately operated prisons, the implementation of the First Step Act, and the availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) and sanitary supplies for staff and inmates. close
