The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee held a hearing on the status of the 2020 Census. Testifying before Congress was U.S. Census Bureau Acting Director Ron Jarmin, who was joined by two officials from the Government Accountability Office, Strategic Issues Managing Director Christopher Mihm and Nick Marinos, the director for information technology and cybersecurity. Several topics were discussed, including the challenges the Census Bureau faced due to the coronavirus pandemic, perceived interference from the Trump administration, concerns with ensuring the count of rural, and low-income populations, and data security. They also discussed delays in releasing data to the states and why the Census Bureau cannot partner with the Internal Revenue Service for data collection. close
