The Senate Rules Committee held a hearing on S.1, the For the People Act, a wide-ranging bill related to voting rights, campaign finance, and ethics. Former Attorney General Eric Holder, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner, Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, and Brennan Center for Justice President Michael Waldman comprised the first panel. In the second panel, the committee heard from three former Federal Election Commission chairs as well as campaign finance reform advocates. In rare appearances at a congressional hearing, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) made opening statements. Senator Schumer said that new voting measures in Republican-led state legislatures “smack of Jim Crow rearing its ugly head once again.” In response, Senator McConnell said that only two of the state bills referred to had passed and “they had absolutely nothing to do with suppressing the vote.” close
