Author Sarah Kay Bierle discussed the 1864 Shenandoah Valley campaigns and Civil War medical care at that time. She noted both the Union and Confederacy had developed improved systems by that point in the war to recover, transport, and care for wounded troops. But she shared contemporary diary entries from soldiers, civilians, and physicians to show the state of care during a battle and its immediate aftermath still often remained chaotic and grueling for those involved. Ms. Bierle is managing editor of the “Emerging Civil War” blog, which hosted this talk as part of its spring symposium. close
