On July 26,1948, President Harry Truman signed an executive order desegregating the U.S. Armed Forces.  Prior to the order, African Americans suffered various forms of discrimination, including separation from white soldiers and increased disciplinary action. Authors Chad Williams and Robert Jefferson gave an overview of the African American experience during World Wars I and II as well as the efforts still being made to have their service recognized. They were joined by University of Georgia history professor John Morrow. This discussion was part of an annual conference hosted by the National World War II Museum, and they provided this video. close
