Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that the Justice Department was opening a civil investigation to assess the practices of the Minneapolis Police Department. At the start, Attorney General Garland provided reaction to the guilty verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Mr. Chauvin was found guilty of second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for the death of George Floyd. Mr. Floyd, a Black man, died while in police custody in May 2020. The video of Mr. Floyd’s arrest sparked nationwide protests. close
