Eric Lander testified during his confirmation hearing to become the next director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. He addressed several lawmakers' concerns regarding allegations of sexism and two meetings with convicted sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein. Mr. Lander called Epstein an “abhorrent” person and stressed he did not know about Epstein’s criminal actions before meeting with him briefly in 2012. On the sexism allegations, Mr. Lander acknowledged it was a mistake to have understated the work and contributions of two women scientists to gene editing technology in a 2016 paper he authored. If confirmed, Mr. Lander told lawmakers he would be committed to diversity and inclusion in the science technology engineering and math (STEM) workforce. close
