Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. special representative for Afghanistan reconciliation, testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on the Biden administration’s strategy in Afghanistan. In his opening remarks, Mr. Khalilzad addressed President Biden’s decision to withdraw all U.S. forces from the country by September 11, 2021, saying, “The withdrawal so far has taken place without major incident, and we expect this to continue.” Other topics addressed included rights for Afghan women, counterterrorism efforts, and peace negotiations between the Taliban and Afghanistan government. Karen Freeman, the USAID acting assistant administrator for Asia, also testified at the hearing. close
