Senators Simon and Jeffords called a news conference to discuss the ongoing U.S. role in Somalia. Ms. Taft briefed the press on the reasons for a continued U.S. presence in the region. The Senators announced that they will continue to support the president’s decision to maintain the U.S. efforts to bring about a stable government in the Somalia. They both stated that to leave now would establish a reputation that the U.S. “cuts and runs” when the situation is difficult. Following opening statements, the participants took questions from reporters. close
