The Senate blocked debate from beginning on the House-passed bill creating a commission to investigate the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The vote was 54-35, six votes short of the 60 needed. All Democrats and independents present voting for the measure, along with Republican Senators Susan Collins (ME), Mitt Romney (UT), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Rob Portman (OH), Ben Sasse (NE), and Bill Cassidy (LA). Senators also agreed to delay action on a bill to create new science and technology programs in an effort to compete better against China, and they also approved a couple Biden administration nominees. close
