Attorney General Merrick Garland testified before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies regarding the Justice Department’s fiscal year 2022 budget request. The attorney general stated the budget reflects the department’s priorities of addressing foreign and domestic terrorism and protecting civil rights. He responded to a variety of questions, including the department’s decisions to pursue certain Trump administration cases; security threats to federal judges; funding local law enforcement and the Defund the Police movement; privacy concerns related to recently released IRS data; ensuring the solvency of various victim funds; illegal immigration and the backlog of asylum seekers; suing China for damages related to the coronavirus pandemic; seeking journalists phone records; and police departments reporting use of force data. close
