Senate Hearing on U.S. Policy on Belarus

Mrs. Tsikhanouskaya talked about being forced from Belarus after President Lukashenko claimed victory in a 2020 election despite international outcries about the election’s integrety. In May 2021, the president forced the landing of a plane carrying a journalist who was critical of the regime. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya testified about becoming the opposition leader and called for increased sanctions against the political leadership in Belarus. Julie Fisher, the U.S. Ambassador-Designate to Belarus, and Jamie Fly, the president and CEO of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, also testified.
