The Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing to examine federal legislative proposals that would allow college athletes to earn money from their name, image, and likeness, or “NIL” rights. Witnesses included NCAA President Mark Emmert, Gonzaga University men’s basketball coach Mark Few, ESPN college football analyst Rod Gilmore, Howard University President Wayne Frederick, and several sports law experts. At the time of the hearing, 19 states had adopted college athlete compensation legislation, with laws in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida and New Mexico going into effect on July 1, 2021. close
