President Clinton addressed the nation from the Oval Office concerning the recent events in Somalia. He outlined his plan for completing the operation underway in Somalia. He announced that the U.S. troop contingency will be doubled in an effort to secure the troops already present and assure that an orderly, safe withdrawal is possible. 104 additional armored vehicles, and a U.S. carrier will be sent to the region to insure the safety of the troops. The president’s speech was at 4:00 p.m. EDT and was carried live by the three broadcast networks and CNN. close
