President Biden signed into law the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, making it now the 11th annual federal holiday and the first one established since the creation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983. Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. “I’ve only been president for several months, but I think this will go down for me as one of the greatest honors I will have had as president,” he told an audience of lawmakers and guests at the White House. He added, “Great nations don’t ignore their most painful moments.” Also in attendance at the signing was Vice President Kamala Harris, members of the Congressional Black Caucus and Opal Lee, the activist known as the grandmother of Juneteenth. close
