The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security convened a hearing to examine the pros and cons of police using facial recognition technology. Robert Williams, who was among the witnesses testifying, filed a lawsuit against the Detroit Police after they used the technology to arrest him. The technology falsely identified him as a shoplifting suspect. He testified on his experience and its negative impact on his family. Others testifying included policy experts, a former member of President Obama’s 21st Century Policing Task Force, and an official with the Government Accountability Office (GAO). close
