The Texas State Legislature convened a special legislative session to consider Republican-sponsored voting bills. During the session, Republicans adopted a motion concerning absentee Democratic lawmakers, who left the state to block the special legislative session. Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan (R) stated, “Members, a sergeant-at-arms, and any officer appointed by him are directed to send for all absentees, whose attendance is not excused for the purpose of securing and maintaining their attendance under warrant of arrest if necessary.” In addition, Speaker Phelan announced that the House could not conduct business until there was a quorum. Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) ordered the special session that ends on August 6, 2021. close
