President Biden and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a joint news conference at the White House. Topics addressed included U.S-Germany relations, global COVID-19 vaccine distribution, climate change, Russia’s Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline, and relations with China. During the news conference, President Biden was asked about the current political situations in Haiti and Cuba. The president responded, in part, by saying, “Communism is a failed system--universally failed system. I don’t see socialism as a very useful substitute.” Following the event, the president and first lady were scheduled to host a private dinner for Chancellor Merkel in the State Dining Room. close
