The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee held the first of two hearings that week on the threat of domestic terrorism and extremism in the United States. Experts in hate crimes and domestic terrorism testified before the committee, discussing topics that included the rise of white supremacy, attacks on religious institutions and people of faith, and the targeting of Asian Americans because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They also addressed the role social media companies can play in combating the rise of extremism on their platforms. close
