They said that their goal was to evacuate as many people out of the country as they could, including all Americans who want to leave, and that the Kabul airport had been secured by American troops. When talking about the situation in Afghanistan, Secretary Austin said, “All of this is very personal for me. This is a war that I fought in and led. I know the country, I know the people, and I know those who fought alongside me.” He went on to say that “we have a moral obligation to help those who helped us, and I feel the urgency deeply.”
