The European Parliament held a joint committee meeting on the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. Josep Borrell, the European Union high representative for foreign affairs and security, called the situation in Afghanistan a “catastrophe.” He said getting EU representatives, Afghan partners, and civilians wanting to leave out as quickly and safely as possible was a priority. During the meeting, members expressed concern for the safety of women and girls, discussed the potential for Afghanistan to become a “terrorist breeding ground,” and stressed the importance to have a unified plan in place to address a potential migration crisis. close
