President Biden spoke about the ongoing evacuation of Americans and Afghan and NATO allies from Kabul following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. He cautioned that “the evacuation of thousands of people from Kabul is going to be hard and painful, no matter when it started,” but stressed that the administration’s top priority was evacuating American citizens “as quickly and as safely as possible.” He said that approximately 11,000 people had been flown out of Kabul during the previous 36 hours. The president also talked about the administration’s response to Tropical Storm Henri, expressed his condolences for those killed by flash flooding in Middle Tennessee, and answered several reporters' questions, including one on the possibility of extending the August 31 deadline for removing all troops from Afghanistan. close
