President Biden spoke about the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan one day after the last U.S. service member left the country, closing out the 20-year conflict. During his speech, the president addressed his decision to stick to his August 31 deadline, arguing delaying withdrawal only posed more danger to U.S. service members and Afghans. He also spoke about America’s ability to continue to evacuate Americans that remain in the country. He vowed to continue to fight against terrorist threats in Afghanistan and around the world. The president ended his remarks outlining the cost of the war--both financial and the strain on America’s service members and their families. He did not take any questions from reporters. close
