Senators McCain, R-AZ took the floor to discuss the U.S. operation in Somalia following the president’s news conference concerning the release of U.S. serviceman Michael Durant. Durant had been held hostage in Mogadishu since a failed mission to remove General Aidid from the capital. Senator McCain stated that he views the operation as “nation-building,” and the U.S. should withdraw as soon as possible. Senator Leahy, D-VT reiterated the senator’s comments concerning the operation in Somalia. close
