This was the first time all three had testified since the official U.S. departure on August 31, 2021, after 20 years in the country. Senators pressed the military leaders on many topics, including the chaotic evacuations of Americans and Afghan allies after the Taliban takeover, intelligence leading up to the defeat of the Afghan security forces, and counterterrorism measures in the future without a U.S. presence in Afghanistan. Additionally, and unrelated to the withdrawal, General Milley defended his post-2020 election calls to his Chinese counterpart to reassure him that then-President Trump would not attack China. These calls were first revealed publicly through excerpts from a book authored by journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa.
