Northwestern University History Professor Amy Stanley discussed her biography, Stranger in the Shogun’s City, about a Japanese woman’s life in Edo (now Toyko) during the 19th century, just prior to the city’s encounters with Commodore Matthew Perry and the United States Navy in 1853.
