The Supreme Court heard oral argument in United States v. Vaello-Madero, a case on denied disability benefits to Puerto Rican residents and equal protection rights. Jose Luis Vaello-Madero, an American citizen born in Puerto Rico, in 2012 became seriously ill while living in New York. He was unable to work and began getting Supplemental Security Income. When he returned to Puerto Rico, however, he lost those benefits because Puerto Rico residents are by law excluded from the SSI program. close
