The House convened for one-minute speeches, at the end of which Republicans moved to adjourn. The vote on adjournment lasted over seven hours, as Democrats worked off the floor to secure the votes needed to pass the Senate-passed infrastructure bill without first passing President Biden’s social spending agenda, the Build Back Better plan. When the vote on adjournment ended, members took another vote, which lasted over 4 1/2 hours, on whether to continue debate on the social spending plan. After agreeing to continue, the House recessed briefly. close
