The Senate voted down legislation that would sanction businesses and people involved in planning, building, and operating Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Europe. The bill failed to reach the 60 votes needed for passage. Senators also continued debate on a potential change to Senate rules to prevent voting rights legislation from being filibustered, but Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) announced in a floor speech earlier in the day that she would not support that rule change. After the Nord Stream 2 vote, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said the Senate would adjourn for the night, but would postpone recess and take up the House-passed voting rights legislation the following Tuesday, and that if Republicans obstruct the legislation, the Senate would consider changing the Senate rules. close
