While debating a filibuster rule change after a vote to advance voting rights legislation failed to meet the 60-vote threshold, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) accused Democrats of “ruining” the Senate by proposing this rule change, which he called “radicalism.” Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) followed by explaining why this change was necessary, saying it was “time for the Senate to adapt, to meet the challenge of the modern age.” The rule change would have let a simple majority move the bill forward while allowing the minority to voice opposition through a “talking filibuster.” close
