During the first panel of a House Transportation Subcommittee on Aviation hearing, lawmakers pressed the FAA Administrator Stephen Dickson on why the 5G rollout went so badly and prompting Verizon and AT&T to turn off 5G towers near several major airports due to safety concerns over interference with a plane’s landing equipment. Mr. Dickson said he did not want to point fingers at anyone but added the FCC’s process “didn’t serve anyone well.” He reiterated that both the FAA and FCC were working together with the airline and telecommunications industries to come to a resolution. The landing equipment of concern is called the radio altimeter which measures the height above ground during times of poor visibility for pilots. Subcommittee Chair Rick Larsen (D-WA) noted that the FCC was invited to testify at the hearing, but no representative was present. Groups representing airlines and helicopter industries testified in the second panel. close
