The Supreme Court heard a consolidated oral argument in West Virginia v. EPA, a case on the Clean Air Act and how much authority the agency has to issue major rules to regulate and limit greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. This case stemmed from the Obama administration’s Clean Power Plan (CPP) that set strict power plant emission reduction goals. The Trump administration implemented the Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule, which eased emission reduction standards. The ruling in this case could affect future policy efforts to address climate change. On June 30, 2022, the Supreme Court Ruled 6-3 against the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority. close
