The senator pointed to an 11-year gap between the time children begin experiencing problems related to mental health and when they first get treatment for those issues. The committee heard from mental health care professionals and a teenager, who helps other teens through a crisis prevention hotline. The witnesses spoke about barriers to care including a lack of mental health care professionals, a need for better training, privacy issues that prevent coordination between care teams, and a lack of coverage through Medicare and Medicaid.
