As a prelude to the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Capitol Building, the 130-year-old Statue of Freedom was returned to the top of the Capitol dome after a 5-month restoration process costing $750,000. Mr. Brown and Representative Mica discussed the architecture of the Capitol Building and the decorative painting under the cast-iron dome. Ms. Merk-Gould discussed the restoration process and Mr. Ramage discussed the moving of the statue. Music was played periodically and President Clinton and other dignitaries were seen gathering for the ceremony. close
