Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced during a press conference in Ottawa that he had invoked Canada’s Emergencies Act to help put an end to what he called an “illegal occupation” of important trade routes by truckers over their opposition to COVID-19 mandates in Canada. The prime minister said that the emergency powers would be temporary and geographically targeted to areas heavily impacted by the blockades along the U.S.-Canadian border, giving these affected provinces the authorities and resources they need to restore peace and order. Prime Minister Trudeau also touched on the escalating situation in Ukraine, saying the Canadian government had pledged an additional loan of $500 million to the help the country of Ukraine. close
