The Senate opened with the annual reading of George Washington’s farewell address, read by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT). Lawmakers voted against advancing legislation to prohibit states from restricting access to abortions. Members also voted in favor of beginning work to reform the delivery operations of the U.S. Postal Service, and approve health care benefits for current and retired postal employees. The Senate recessed subject to the call of the chair, so that senators could attend a classified briefing with Biden administration officials on the U.S. response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. close
