During an address, President Biden announced new sanctions against Russia in response to President Vladimir Putin sending Russian troops into separatist regions of Ukraine. President Biden said the actions were “the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.” The sanctions affect two Russian financial institutions, Russian debt and access to U.S and European capital, Russian elites and their family members, and progress on the Russian natural gas pipeline Nord Stream 2. The president also said he ordered U.S. troops into the Baltic nations and committed to defending NATO allies. He warned sanctions on Russia may have an impact on gas prices in the United States, but said he hoped to “limit the pain the American people are feeling at the gas pump.” He did not respond to questions. close
