The Canadian election results were reported and analyzed as the returns came in. There were 2,155 candidates running in 295 election districts, called ridings. The five major parties are the Progressive Conservative Party, the Liberal Party, the New Democratic Party, the Reform Party, and the Bloc Quebecois. Analysts described the apparent shift of voters from the Progressive Conservative Party to the Liberal Party, and the close race between the Reform Party and the Bloc Quebecois for status as official opposition. Jean Chretien of the Liberal Party became prime minister, and the Reform Party and Preston Manning became the official opposition. Numerous live interviews and satellite interviews were conducted as well as a victory and concession speeches. close
