President Biden signed the Emmitt Till Anti-Lynching Act into law, making lynching a federal hate crime, during a ceremony at the White House. The bill, named for 14-year-old Emmett Till, who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955, comes more than 100 years since the first anti-lynching legislation was introduced in 1900 and after 200 failed Congressional attempts to pass similar legislation. Vice President Kamala Harris spoke at the event. She co-sponsored the legislation when she was a senator. Michelle Duster, the great-granddaughter of early civil rights activist Ida B. Wells, also made remarks. close
